- You're only stuck if you willingly choose to be. I gave my kids $0 towards college, $0 towards a car, $0 towards their first real estate in Colorado apartments, etc. I give my parents $0 towards their living expenses (then again, my parents are pretty well off, but if they got "poor", I'd tell them to sell their home and move into a cabin, trailer, or elderly Colorado housing where 30% of your income pays for a small apartment with utilities and appliances included
