This was answered here I think (public ticket): http://support.myshopify.com/discussions/design/511-i-have-an-existing-store-and-i-want-to-make-a-pop-up-store-at-a-subdomain-with-different-theme

Or the question is very similar.

Solution

1. Stick these 11 items in a collection. You can create collections on the Collections page in your admin. Say you name that collection Special.

2. You can take this 1 step further and provide special styling just for the Special collection. Go to Assets -> Theme Editor, and under Templates create an alternate collection template, say collection.special.liquid. In that template, you can apply a special layout - which you would need to create as well. Or not. You can definitely generate your special markup for that collection page. Once you've created and edited that alternate template to your liking, you go the Special collection page in your admin and you apply your special template to your collection in the sidebar.

If you use a special layout in collection.special.liquid, you call it that way:

{% layout 'special' %}

Where special is the name of the layout file for your aternate layout, minus the .liquid extension.

You're reading my mind that would be a good one. I have not read the docs yet, but that one would make a great example.

I have a several others I can send you as well if you just want to experiment. I had one that was giving me hell and I ended up having to edit the flash and put the folders on dropbox to make everything work. I'll drop you a couple if you like. LMK. :)

Can you recommend a good Flash package to use as an XML/images/Flash/swfobject example? I'm thinking cu3er.

I'll stick with my first statement :P and Gavin's follow up.

This is definitely a problem in the works. You are looking at a lot of overhead to hide pages and products from each other. Much easier to make a new store here.

Nice! That will be a good addition. We need to address xml in that one. It can be confusing even to me sometimes. Most of these cheap flash files that people are buying use a folder based path and obviously we can't control and create a folder in the assets area. I have not had the need to use an xml.liquid yet, but this may alleviate the problem on most of these files.

I guess it could be done, but it sounds like it would be a lot easier creating a second store.

To do it:

Put conditional statements in theme.liquid so your header, nav, footer etc links don't go back to the original site. You will probably need to pull in a different style sheet as well.

Use an alternate template for the special collection and products.

You'd also have to consider corner cases throughout the store. For example, the user may remove all items they have added to the cart and if are showing a message "Your cart appears empty, please continue shopping" which links to your regular collection, you'd have to change that. Search would be tricky as well.

You can't style the checkout page twice, so you'd have to go with a generic one there.

LOL. The new version was screwed last time I messed with it. I gave up and reverted to 1.5 which is very straightforward to use. In fact it's still the only one I use. But I hate flash, and so avoid it whenever possible. You can get a copy of 1.5 here: http://blog.deconcept.com/swfobject/#download

If you're just dying to scream you can watch a tut on 2.0 here (the last 3 minutes or so): http://www.gotoandlearn.com/play?id=77

They may have made some better implementation on the 2.2 version that is out now. But since 2.0 release was nothing but problems I avoid. I have yet to run into anything that did not work with 1.5.

I am experiencing a mental block over that page: http://code.google.com/p/swfobject/wiki/documentation

Was swfobject supposed to make it easy to embed Flash?

Sorry for the confusion. I would like to create this collection on a separate page, such as example.com/new_products/. This page would have a completely different theme/look than the originally store.

What I meant by not wanting it to link to the original store was that it would have no navigation or hyperlinks that would lead back to the other products or store design. Once people are on this page, they either have to buy one of the new products or manually enter in another site.

Does that help to clarify? Let me know if I need to elaborate further. Thanks for your reply!
