How does having multiple domains affect SEO

by Addison - Member - 07:12PM, Mar 11, 2008

I am changing my domain name for my store. Would it be better to make it the primary domain, and have it set to always redirect, or would it be best not to have it redirect?

Which would be best for SEO?

Should I have all domains redirect to my new shop name, or just claim them but not re-direct them?

Google hates duplicate content so if you are going to add new domain names then you have to do a permanent redirect from these domains to your Shopify site.

Is there some special reason you want more than one domain? As I say, if Google thinks that you are creating several sites with the same content then in the worse cases you could find all of them removed from the index.

There is lots of documentation out there. Here is one example article which I hope helps…

If you have multiple domains for a site, you can tell Google (via Webmaster Tools) which is the primary one. I would assume it then uses that as the primary version of the page.
