IDEA: Email This Product to a Friend

by ica - Member - 07:26PM, Aug 23, 2007

Please forgive if this has already been mentioned. What about the idea of having an “email this product to a friend” link/button integrated into shopify? Similar to the way that one would share a video on youtube, or share a news article on various sites? I don’t know how complex/easy this would be to program, or how vulnerable it would be to spamming, etc. However, it could be a great tool.

I second that. It would be great!

I doubt this would be high on the priority list of features, but I wouldn’t mind seeing a feature like this as well.

A slightly unrelated feature that I would also like to see, although I could probably figure it out on my own, is a link to email the store owner when a products is out of stock. In a sense the customer would be “voting” for this product to be restocked…does that make sense?!

Meashman, this is what I did for my store related to your second idea:

I created a page named “Sold out?” where I ask the customer to send me an email if his favorite itelm is already out of stock. I say that an email will be sent to him as soon as the product is back in stock.

Then, on the products concerned, I added a link in their description to the page “sold out”. The products concerned are the ones I import from the US (I’m in UK) because i know it’s gonna take a while to have them shipped to me.

Does that make sense? WDYT?

I have to say …”refer a friend” is a great idea. And depending on the store it is used a lot. I had it with Zen Cart, and I was emailed when it was utilized, and it was used alot.. at least once a week… people sending links to things to their parents, grandparents, friends… saying… “ooh look what I found” etc. I would love to see this as an option.

Would also love this feature! “Send to a Friend” would be beneficial to the whole “Viral Marketing” aspect of our future site.

Very nice Crystal.
Would you be so kind as to either explain how you achieved it or post the code?

Thank you

Hi Everyone.. First post here.

I am totally web design illiterate so I am having a web designer design my ecommerce website. Just because something isn’t a feature doesn’t mean it cant be created and put on the website if a designer or programmer was able to make it right? You can still add or change the underlying coding since its based on HTML/CSS or whatever?

I’m specifically asking because I think this “Tell a friend” feature would be very important for my business…

Thanks in advance for anyone who can help me out.

The ‘tell a friend’ feature we use is from Constant Contact. It comes with their newsletter service which we use anyway – I’ve added their ‘gift reminder’ feature to this site too.

I like it because it tracks which product pages people have forwarded

We call it ‘send page to a friend’:

thank you very much Stacelynn, I was going to use vertical response but I’ll swap for constant contact if they have the “tell a friend” feature.

thanks again

Vagabond07 – you are correct; your web designer can add functionality (like the Tell a Friend script etc.) because it is HTML and CSS with Liquid tags.

Be aware that any server side scripts such as PHP will need to be housed on an external server however. Generally speaking, finding a service such as Constant Contact that you can ‘plug in’ to you site is also a good option.

Just occurred to me – why not use the ‘Add This’ button and modify the options to include email?

http://addthis.com/customization.php

It’s free, and it supports social networking. Thanks Ryan for the original post regarding the Add This Button! ;-)
