CDN Packet Loss?

Hi Dave, I’m from IndyNET, the CDN provider that Shopify is now using.

Earlier today we deployed a change to our Extreme Networks switching equipment worldwide that rate-limited incoming ICMP echo requests to reduce network load and improve performance.

Since it appears to cause some alarm with customers (we’ve had several frantic emails as well as your forum post!) we’ve reversed the change, even though it of course didn’t affect any real services, just people pinging the servers…

The Pingdom page (linked below) remains the authoritative indicator of which servers are up, as it uses HTTP to perform the test.

Note that if a server shows as down on Pingdom, this would normally not mean that customers were unable to hit the CDN from that area, because requests would be automatically rerouted to the next closest server. We’re planning on adding a publicly-visible check to Pingdom that tests “CDN availability” from various places, once we’ve determined the best way to do that.

Kind regards,
Jasper Bryant-Greene

Thanks for the quick response Jasper.

I wasn’t too worried at the site was loading fine for me, and if the change improves service, then I’m all for it!

I just wanted to double check that our international customers were managing to get through ok.

Thanks again,

Dave
