What’s going on? Taking forever and we’re getting several complaints which is not good for business.

Can you be a bit more specific? We have monitoring in place which tests the performance form many parts of the world and its all as good as always.

Our customers have reported the site being slow from Australia.

Sorry, these are not technical reports, but I have still heard it from a couple of people.

Well Tobi, when something like this happens and I get calls…what tools or information I should gather to help you diagnose the issue?

I want to be as specific as possible but not exactly sure where to start on this. Would simply providing the output of some pings help?

I just react to calls we get from frustrated people who leave our site because of the response. Doesn’t happen all the time but it is not the first time either.

Thanks!

Ideally you could post a screenshot of the firebug network tab after loading your shopify store ( or whatever shopify page appears slow ).

Shopify is ridiculously slow from Australia. I am viewing and modifying my shopify page at 12:25am AEST and here are some ping results.

Pinging cluster.jadedpixel.com [204.15.199.4] with 32 bytes of data:

Reply from 204.15.199.4: bytes=32 time=307ms TTL=243
Reply from 204.15.199.4: bytes=32 time=311ms TTL=243
Reply from 204.15.199.4: bytes=32 time=305ms TTL=243
Reply from 204.15.199.4: bytes=32 time=305ms TTL=243

I am only on a trial account at the moment while I evaluate shopify, does that matter? Are trial accounts based on another server?

@Geeves: try using firebug with firefox, and then look at the network tab. It will give you a nice overview of load times, and help more than ping data.

Hi,

While ping tests are one measure, it is important to understand the results. Are those really bad times? If you want another simple test to try… use tracert as well. It will show you if there is a router between you and the server that is S-L-O-W. For example… you could have a router located in Australia, just the other side of your ISP, showing packet times of * * *... which would tell you that the problem lies in your homeland. Conversely, it could show packets getting in trouble somewhere in the USA… again.. just a simple diagnostic tool to help pinpoint problems.

We are getting the ‘We’re experiencing a technical problem and we are doing everything we can to resolve it as soon as possible’ message daily now.

Also, experiencing the 20-40 second delays as well.

We are UK based.

Rachel.

Hi folks,

My apologies for the slowness. We had a major upswing in server traffic last night and we brought additional capacity online to deal with it.

For those who enjoy charts and graphs (and who doesn’t?), here’s the spike, and the resolution from the perspective of our monitoring service:

Hi everyone,

I’m about to relaunch my site, migrating from Yahoo to Shopify (I’m sure that warms the heart of many Jaded Pixels). You can imagine my concern last night, just before my new site went live, when pages were taking 60 seconds to load! I’m glad the situation seems to be resolved this morning, but…

How is it that everyone was reporting the problem last night and Tobias couldn’t see the problem? Why was the spike apparent after the fact and not during? I don’t care about the technical reasons why…I’m just concerned that the monitoring didn’t catch it.

Regards,
Rob

Rob,

If you check the date on the post from Tobi you are referring to it is over half a month old. Two separate instances entirely! :)

The reason Tobi couldn’t see the problems from the previous instance was because it was likely on the customer side or one of the pipes in between the server and the customer.

Regards,
Mike

In response to this thread we started negotiations with a CDN provider and we are bringing this to all Shopify stores now. junro.myshopify.com ’s admin interface is actually already backed by the CDN and should be really snappy.

Here are ping times for the CDN from around the globe: http://www.just-ping.com/index.php?vh=cdn.shopify.com&;s=ping%21
