Thanks Tobi and team. We’re confident this is going to help our marketing efforts no end.
Edit: Do you mind me asking why you decided to implement discount on step 2 of checkout than earlier, e.g. on the cart screen. Sure you’ve come up with a good reason but just interested to know.
The main reason was that paypal pro users can skip the first step by following a special link which logs them into their paypal account on this page. The second step however is visited by everyone.
I can answer that Kati, and I have used it and have my first order in from it. It is before shipping amount. So, excluding the shipping amount.
On a minor request, making an existing code editable would be great instead of having to delete it and recreate it if a mistake is made in setting it up. Or worse, you make it, advertise the code and THEN discover you made a major error in it.
1. Is this totally separate from Google Checkout coupons? (looks like it is).
2. Can I integrate Google Checkout Coupons into my Shopify cart now?
For all shopify folks feel free to use this coupon 5OFF if you want to save an extra 5% off your game order :) (Gotta test this somehow! hehe)
Update: I added a coupon and when I add an item to my cart I don’t see a coupon field to show it. Do I need to modify my template? When I hit checkout it just shows my money order or Google Checkout page.
Thanks for the heads up. I don’t have a test case to try it out so I wasn’t sure how it would show up. I’ll email the coupon to some folks and see if it does show up or not :)
We support using coupons with Google Checkout. Google Checkout uses your Shopify coupons. Basically when the buyer enters the code in Google Checkout, Google Checkout will then ask Shopify if that is a valid coupon for the store and then apply the appropriate discount.
The coupons you create in Google Checkout itself are in no way used or usable by Shopify.
We’ll see about limiting the total number of uses of a discount on Monday :)
We support discount codes with all payment mechanisms supported by Shopify even google checkout. Be advised though that google checkout lets you create own coupon codes in their admin. Those will not work. This is a technical limitation on Google’s side of things. It shouldn’t really matter though because our discount system is as complete as theirs ! :)
Thanks for all the great feedback guys! It’s much appreciated
Looks great, guess I really need to get some promotions started. Could we get coupons that only apply to a specific item. What about free shipping coupons?
The discounts apply to the price of the cart’s line items not including shipping or taxes. So if you have a requirement of $10 then they must have $10 worth of line items in the cart to meet the requirement.
This also applies during the application of a coupon. You could give the customer a 100% discount, which would make the subtotal $0, but they would still pay the shipping amount.
thanks for this update. Ill be sure to put it to good use when my site fully kicks off.
one question i had. Is it possible to limit a coupon to a collection? my reasoning is that i have a variety of products and the profit margin varys greatly. if the coupons were limited to a certain collection i could have a specific sale on those items without having to manually change all the prices. it would also mean i could offer bigger discounts on the collections with higher profit margins.
I’ve just starting using shopify and am very impressed by all that is available. My big missing feature was…discount coupons! But now you’ve got it and it works great.
+1 vote on free shipping from us with purchases over certain amount.

One of our stores is going to really need this feature very soon. Was there any progress on that?
Do the discount codes apply to all items? Usually when a store gives a discount, it is only for items at regular price. Is there a way to exclude the items that are on sale?

Wow, thank you guys! Will put it to use right away…
Question: “and applies to orders of USD __ or more.”
Is that USD __ including shipping or excluding the shipping amount?

Valien, I believe the coupons are automatically sent to Google Checkout and can be entered there by your customers.
You won’t see the coupon field on your cart. It’s on the final checkout page with the payment info.
10:12PM, Mar 16, 2007
Thankyou Shopify!
One of the key features we have been waiting for!
YOU ROCK!

Any chance of adding 1 time coupon support? Where the coupon would expire after 1 use or even a number of uses specified by us?
12:45AM, Mar 17, 2007
I 2nd that Dan. A coupon for the first X people would be great.
Funny how when we get something great, we always want more :-)
It really is nice guys!

Could you not just change stock quantity and set it so customer cannot purchase when at zero?
I guess – First 10 buyers and last 10 in stock

Cliff,
Thanks for the heads up. I don’t have a test case to try it out so I wasn’t sure how it would show up. I’ll email the coupon to some folks and see if it does show up or not :)

Johnnyrules,
Doesn’t really work for a store wide sale where you have 10’s or 100’s of products.

Tobi,
That’s the answer I was looking for! Sweet. So I’ll not use google’s coupon management system but shopify’s instead. :)
Thanks again!

Shawkshaw,
Very interesting idea. We’ll definitely keep this idea in mind when we do any updates to the discount system.
06:01PM, Mar 30, 2007
I like Shawkshaw’s idea as well. Would also like to see free shipping coupons.

We’ve just launched our store, through which we sell shirts, but we also will be giving some away.
So I wanted to add a big +1 for shipping coupons, so that we can give a way a shirt and not have the customer pay anything at all.
12:45AM, Jul 28, 2007
Mathew,
Shipping coupons are something that I’d like to add as soon as I get a free moment.

I third Cynthia.
This is a really big thing for me as well. I’ve asked the question on getsatisfaction here too:

We want to give a discount dependent on the price of your order: for instance – any order over $100 get 10% off, any order over $150 get 15% off etc
anyone have suggestions on this feature.

evolvestudios:
currently you will need to create separate codes for each discount level.
on the original topic:
I too would really like product specific codes!

Hi,
I would like to limit the amount of times a coupon code can be used by a customer, ie each individual customer can use a code once only.
Thanks,
Asker
