Product specific tax settingby Bazza - Member - 11:08PM, Nov 22, 2006 |

I appreciate that there have been several threads concerning the implementation of tax in Shopify, but here is another potential area for discussion. On our site – Love Eco – we have a small clothing range (which we will grow). However we would like to include some baby clothes. The problem, however, is that in the UK, baby clothing is tax free. The problem is that tax settings are globally applied in Shopify. We need to be able to overide and/or set tax at a product level, so that if someone buys this item we can be clear no tax has been applied. Has anyone got any experience of this or similar problems. I can imagine that someone who may sell physical and digital goods from the same shop may have a similar problem with different tax needing to be applied. /Duncan |

Shopify does not support multiple tax tables yet. The easiest way would be to factor the tax savings into the product price. ---

I figure you guys are working on tax tables from the posts in other forums. I just wanted to add this requirement into the mix. I don’t think the solution you describe would work because when it came to checkout the tax would still be calculated/applied, and therefore displayed (assuming you have a tax region set up). Essentially it is illegal to show tax on an invoice for an item that is not taxable. Does that make sense? You can see this is only a problem if you are selling products which may use different tax rates, which I suppose is fairly unusual. Anyway, keep up the good work.

It is not that unusual. We have this problem at our store. I’m glad to see you’re working on that way (factoring tax savings into the product prices), Tobi. ---

Ana Rita, I think Tobi means just change your prices to make it all average out OK for you & your customers.

Tweaking prices doesn’t work for me. There is one, global, setting for tax that I can see – either to include tax in prices displayed, or to add tax to the prices once at checkout In this simple example: PRODUCT A costs £10 (which includes tax of £1.49) PRODUCT B also costs £10 (but is tax exempt) If I have set up a UK tax rate (17.5%) it will assume all my prices incl this tax. So if I buy both products when I get to checkout it will say the tax is £2.98 when in fact tax should only be £1.49. You can’t change the price of product B to counter this, because tax will still be applied on the subtotal at checkout. I could/should have titled this thread “Adding multiple tax rates for a country” because that is probably the feature that would help with this problem. Tobi: Are multiple rates per country part of your tax thinking?

Ok, I misunderstood Toby (and maybe Bazza too; i’m sorry; I shouldn’t post that late into the night…). In accounting software in Portugal the tax is indicated in product details, and is presented to customers already incorporated. Then, on checkout, the tax parcels are summed up, and presented as Christina wrote on the topic she initiated about taxing: subtotal (without taxes), tax, total. Maybe there could be two ways of applying tax on shopify: a form field for tax on product details and the current global, per country, on checkout. Shop owners who want to use the first one, leave the second blank; and vice-versa. And two ways to present the total tax charged in checkout. But then there is the problem of non-EU members, who we shoudn’t apply tax to… maybe there could be a way to choose this behaviour on regional settings too. Though we are following Kati’s take on this one. ---
