Everyone from the UK, 3D payment secure is a must very soon and it looks like I will be closing Sept 1st as I have no other option. RBSi have told me 3D will be a must. Shopify's last update on this was "they are working on it".

Its been a great 18months but without being able to take credit cards and payments I have no choice but to close soon unless they find a fast solution.

I cannot survive just on Paypal...even they are changing soon in the UK

Thank You

Any other UK sites closing down or moving because of this ?

Please get down off your high horse and take a dose of reality!

The truth is that you won’t be able to accept Maestro cards until Shopify come up with a 3D Secure solution – which they have said is now a top priority. You will still be able to accept every other card that your gateway supports.

This situation is not ideal as the Maestro card is very popular here in the UK. But I think closing your store completely is a bit of an over reaction.

You will still be able to accept Maestro payments by using your gateway’s virtual terminal so you could always inform customers with these cards to place an order over the phone.

Those comments Matthew are rather interesting. First I would like to say that I have had a conversation with RBSi and they do not seem to share the same comments as you have posted.

1. Sept 1st I will no longer be able to accept Maestro as well as UK Maestro. Plus I was also explained that I must accept “Terms” of my credit card merchant account. Stating that if I do not impliment 3D I risk a fine of 25,000usd.

Also I was told that Visa and Mastercard have also been pushing the 3D verify method.

Virtual Terminal ??? I don’t know about you but most of my customers order product from 11pm to 4am. So unless I enjoy staying up late at night taking orders it simply won’t work.

The risk also is if I get a charge back on a Maestro I can have my Merchant account blocked.

I said I would close my store on Shopify but I would look at another platform that would allow me to use 3D.

I have also told shopify I would help on the cost of supporting 3D months ago.

Not every store is the same Matthew.

Just look at what Google Checkout did a few weeks ago. They completely stopped taking Maestro. This is a clear signal that companies are not ready even big ones like google.

I would appreciate personal comments towards me be used in an email.

Lets be professional here.

Yes not being able to accept Maestro is a real problem (for us also) but I am simply pointing out that you do not need to close your store and nor do you need to risk getting fined, blocked or lashed.

Whilst Visa and MasterCard are pushing 3D Secure, it is not yet mandatory on any card other than Maestro.

There are a number of options available for UK store owners:

1.) Go into the Shopify backend and un-tick the Maestro payment option. Customers now can’t pay using Maestro and you won’t risk a $25,000 fine and nor will you risk having your Merchant account blocked. You can then re-enable when Shopify supports 3D Secure.

2.) Accept Maestro payments through a PayPal Pro UK account for a while until Shopify supports 3D Secure. You could even accept all cards in this way for a while to smooth the checkout process.

3.) Move to another platform.

I know every store is different. We too have had to assess the impact of the 3 above options and have made our decision.

As far as I understand it, the Google decision is not one of simply not being ready, but more of a two fingers at MasterCard (Maestro’s parent company).

Upon reading your comments again, it appears that RBS are the problem here.

The credit card companies have only made 3D Secure mandatory for Maestro. From what you have said, RBS have made up their own set of rules.

I would read those terms carefully to see exactly what they say. Don’t trust what someone in a call center is telling you ;)

Have you had contact with shopify regarding 3d secure, and it now being a “top priority” – did they give you any indication of time scale etc for implementation.

RBS a problem ? Well that seems to be a major problem don’t you agree, since it’s one of the largest banks in the world and they manage my merchant account. Google has bailed out and Paypal is not the best option. Matthew it’s not just RBSi all one has to do is google and see it’s all over the UK and it’s not just Maestro , its Mastercard and Visa

Have a look

Beechy Shopify simply said it’s a priority…that’s about it and closed the thread.

All I will say is if Google bailed out who is next.
Regarding phone orders, Just decided to try one now, funny thing is the transaction was declined by bank…Card was used to attempt multiple purchases and flagged.

3D is here and we must live with it.

Once again I will help fund it as I am sure other UK sellers would to. I love shopify but I am stuck in a difficult position.

Beechy, you can read the un-editted replies from Shopify here:

http://support.myshopify.com/discussions/questions/1090-3d-support-for-credit-debit-card-transactions

“The last update I received from our CTO last week, was that now that our Rackspace move is complete, 3D secure has become the priority. So, the developers are on the task now, but it’s not possible yet to say what the ETA would be.”

Looks like the 3D deadline has now come. I have seen my sales on my website come to a grinding halt. Abandoned orders are on the way up and sales lost bythe hour. I wish my other UK sellers all the best through this difficult time.

As of this morning I was told to Remove the Maestro Icon from my website and no longer able to accept this due to the failure of my site not accepting 3D Secure. This has hit about 40% of my bottom line.

What I have done is order EAN codes and started listing product on Amazon to keep my company alive. It’s very difficult to turn away paying customers and 16 months of hard work on the shopify network.

I will say it again, if Shopify needs help or funds I am willing to help pay some of this development.

Next is when Visa and Master card set there deadlines. Paypal is already saying Dec/Jan and Google has simply said no.

Any suggestions ?

SO FAR TODAY NO ORDERS

Thanks for keeping us updated with actual numbers, Alex.

Last word from Jaded Pixel was from Peter yesterday:

Our CTO e-mailed me and wanted me to pass on reassurance that 3D secure is the priority, but he was unable to give an ETA due to the amount of testing that has to take place, and anything that may turn up during the tests.

Source: http://support.myshopify.com/discussions/questions/1090-3d-support-for-credit-debit-card-transactions

I heard that developers are extremely busy these days so I assume they’re working on this. Another priority they have is to rehurl the way taxes are handled in Shopify.

This work on 3d-secure is no small undertaking. It’s extremely complex. My thoughts are with Cody & all.

Alex,

You can still use NoChex which has 3D secure. I’ve been using them since January without any problems and take about £1000 per week through the store.

Sure I get some people who don’t complete but I check the abandoned orders every day and either phone or email back.

I realise NoChex means you can’t have PayPal working in tandem and that the user is taken to a 3rd party gateway but I’m sure for an interim period it would be suitable.

Interesting, I think it’s only a matter of time that everyone must change and adopt the new way. Does shopify integration work with NoChex 3D ? I use a merchant account. Maestro told me and RBS that unless 3D is on I could get a big fine. Do you take Maestro ? You should take caution because these card companys are not letting up on this.

I will look into NoChex, I was also told to Prepare for Visa and MasterCard to require it soon as well.

As of yesterday my sales dropped due to this

Alex,

As NoChex is a 3rd party gateway and they are fully verified by Visa/Mastercard then there system does all the 3D secure verification – Shopify dont have anything to worry about.

I get Maestro orders no problem.

The difference with NoChex is that it’s not your merchant account. Your just using their merchant facility to take payments – almost like PayPal. If you sign up for a pro account then they will probably ask for a £200 retainer that’s there incase of chargebacks.

NoChex actually seems like it could be an option for us.

Problems with PayPal right now are that they hold 10% of revenue for 6 months which is incredibly difficult for us.

Do customers ‘realise’ they are going through NoChex or is it seemless?

Can you use NoChex as main gateway and still offer PayPal Express to customers? We get about 25% of orders paid by PayPal rather than card.

Not seen any progress update from Shopify so need to start working on alternative to PayPal I think.

NoChex is pretty seamless expecially if you use . The only thing is it appears on the customer bank statement as NoChex not your company name but I’ve never had any comments about this.

Adam this is why I have been pressing for 3D secure by Sage Pay. Sage Pay is wonderful with merchant RBSi. Paypal continue to hurt the merchant, I have had nothing but nightmares on Paypal.

As another 2 weeks go by building chargebacks we still have NO UPDATE on Sage Pay and Worldpay 3D secure. I will say it again for the 100000th time, SHOPIFY I will help with the cost of integration, I would save so much money on chargebacks and could defend them. Special warning to Paypal UK people soon 3D will be needed. I hope you all don't suffer what I have experienced, it's almost half a year now and they are still in development ????? come on

Stuart was told today Nochex only accept UK cards, well this is not good since I am international. Wow I cannot believe I have been left in the dark in the UK here on payment options.

Shopify say here http://support.myshopify.com/discussions/questions/1090-3d-support-for-credit-debit-card-transactions

That it's sometime Q1 2010.

This is not good enough. Don't see how we can continue with Shopify.

The money they will loose from UK sellers leaving will more than pay for them to hire someone to get this done before the time limit.

Adam I share your remarks 100% and I am planning on leaving shopify as soon as I can. I will organize a company to design a new site for me. For Shopify to say Q1 2010 for 3D... I simply don't believe the time target as they have dragged us out long enough. I have spent thousands using this platform and will be glad when I find a new solution. Just wait for the Paypal people to require 3D then we will hear EVERYONE cry.... time to move I am afraid to say.

That's why you dropped me dry, Alex? I never heard back from you.

I am starting to get pissed with Shopify about this too by the way.

Fuck <--- can I see this? Have I really?

That 3d secure stuff is very important.

Hire more developers please, and if you don't have any dough to hire more people maybe it is time to cater to a more serious audience: increase your monthly fees and get rid of these people who are only playing with Shopify in the hope of making easy money online but never will, you know the kind: the hobbyist. They are a burden to the community anyway. They bring down the I.Q. of this community to the floor. Shopify is too cheap.
